On 6 November 2020, EFEE participated in the Extraordinary Social Affairs Board (SAB) meeting organized by CEEP (European Centre of Employers and Enterprises providing Public Services and Services of general interest). The Extraordinary meeting was held in light of the Commission proposal for an EU Directive on adequate minimum wages in the EU, which was introduced on 28 October 2020. The Commission has framed this initiative within the context of their objective to facilitate upward convergence and combat poverty in Europe. The greatest concern to the attending participants was the legal base for this initiative, as the Commission has expressed their desire to establish a framework for minimum wages within the EU in a Directive. This proposal was published however under the “positive with reservation” approval by the Regulatory Scrutiny Board (RSB), which reflects the remaining hesitations on this Directive. Attending participants discussed their views on the legal base of this document as well as the next course of action in case the Directive will be formally adopted. Currently, the proposal is subject to a legal opinion of the Council.
